S335 carbon steel pipe is a medium-strength structural steel pipe manufactured based on European standards (such as EN 10210/EN 10219). The "S335" in its name represents the lower limit of the yield strength of the steel is 335 MPa.

 

What is S335 carbon steel pipe?

 

S335 carbon steel pipe is based on carbon structural steel. It is processed into a tube by hot rolling or cold forming, supplemented by heat treatment technologies such as normalizing or controlled rolling and controlled cooling (TMCP), and finally forms a pipe with specific specifications.

 

According to European standards, its typical mechanical properties include: yield strength ≥335 MPa, tensile strength 470-630 MPa, and elongation ≥18% (longitudinal specimen). Compared with ordinary low-carbon steel (such as Q235), S335 has a strength increase of about 40%, and compared with high-strength steel (such as S460), it has a lower carbon content and better weldability, achieving a good balance between strength and processability.

🔵 Advantages of S335 Carbon Steel Pipe:

 

1. High strength and light weight:

The yield strength of S335 carbon steel pipe reaches more than 335 MPa, and the tensile strength can reach 470-630 MPa, which is significantly higher than ordinary carbon steel (such as 375 MPa tensile strength of Q235). This feature allows it to reduce the wall thickness or cross-sectional size by 15%-20% compared with low-strength steel pipes under the same load conditions, thereby reducing the amount of material used.

 

2. Excellent weldability and processing performance:

Despite its high strength, the carbon equivalent (Ceq) of S335 carbon steel pipe is usually controlled below 0.40% (calculated according to the IIW formula), which is significantly lower than high-strength steel (such as Ceq≈0.47% of S460). This feature allows it to be connected by conventional arc welding, submerged arc welding or gas shielded welding, without the need for complex preheating or post-heat treatment, and the tendency of cold cracking of welded joints is low. In addition, its elongation is ≥18%, and it can withstand cold bending, flaring and other forming processes. The bending radius can reach 3 times the diameter of the pipe (such as the minimum bending radius of Φ100mm pipe is 300mm), which can meet the needs of complex structural design.

 

3. Good weather resistance and economy:

S335 steel pipe can form a dense oxide film in the atmospheric environment by adding trace alloy elements such as copper (Cu) and chromium (Cr) (some grades contain Cu≥0.30%), and its corrosion resistance is improved by 30%-50% compared with ordinary carbon steel. In non-extreme corrosion environments (such as urban atmosphere and dry industrial areas), the service life of bare pipes can reach more than 20 years. If galvanized or painted for protection, the service life can be further extended to 50 years. From a cost perspective, its market price is about 650-800 euros/ton (equivalent to RMB 5000-6200/ton). Although it is about 15% higher than Q235 steel, it has strength advantages and can reduce the cost of the entire life cycle by 10%-18%, with outstanding cost performance.

 

4. Environmental adaptability and sustainability:

The operating temperature range of S335 steel pipe covers -20℃ to 400℃, and the low-temperature impact toughness (≥27J at -20℃) meets the use requirements of most temperate and cold regions, avoiding the risk of low-temperature brittle fracture. At the same time, the production process adopts scrap steel recycling smelting technology, which reduces carbon emissions by about 20% compared with traditional high-strength steel, and is 100% recyclable, meeting the requirements of green buildings and circular economy. In the EU CE certification system, S335 steel pipe can meet the mechanical properties and fire safety standards of CPR (Construction Products Regulation), and is suitable for sustainable building rating system (such as LEED, BREEAM) projects.
