Description:
ASTM A516 is also known as ASME SA516. The full name of the A516/SA516 standard is "Standard Specification for Carbon Steel Plate for Pressure Vessels for Low and Medium Temperature Applications" and is pretty much the default material specification for pressure vessel applications. This grade is primarily used for welded pressure vessels where improved notch toughness is required, typically for low and medium temperature applications. All plates thicker than 1-1/2 inches require normalizing. A516 is the most popular grade of pressure vessel plate in the industry.
This specification of ASTM A516 covers carbon steel plates primarily used for welded pressure vessels where improved notch toughness is important. There are four grades of plate, based on strength levels: Grade 55,60, 65, and 70. The most common is Grade 70 or A516-70. The maximum thickness of the plate is limited only by the ability of the composition to meet the specified mechanical property requirements. The steel should be killed and should meet the fine austenite grain size requirements. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation should be determined by tensile testing of the plate.
