347 stainless steel is a niobium/tantalum stabilized austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel. Type 347 has excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion and oxidation at elevated temperatures. This material is stabilized by the addition of niobium and tantalum to form chromium carbides. Since these elements have a stronger affinity for carbon than chromium, the niobium-tantalum carbides precipitate within the grains rather than forming at grain boundaries.

347 stainless steel is a niobium/tantalum stabilized austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel. Type 347 has excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion and oxidation at elevated temperatures. This material is stabilized by the addition of niobium and tantalum to form chromium carbides. Since these elements have a stronger affinity for carbon than chromium, the niobium-tantalum carbides precipitate within the grains rather than forming at grain boundaries.
347 (UNS S34700) stainless steel plate has good general corrosion resistance and slightly better corrosion resistance than 321 (UNS S32100) in strongly oxidizing conditions. It has excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion after exposure to temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range of 800 – 1500°F (427 – 816°C). This stainless plate has good oxidation resistance and creep strength up to 1500°F (816°C).
