Description:

Duplex 2205 is a nitrogen-enhanced duplex stainless steel developed to address corrosion issues common to the 300 series stainless steels. "Duplex" refers to a family of stainless steels that are neither fully austenitic nor purely ferritic.

The structure of 2205 duplex stainless steel consists of a pool of austenite surrounded by a continuous ferrite phase. In the annealed condition, 2205 contains approximately 40-50% ferrite. 2205 is often referred to as the workhorse grade and is the most widely used grade in the duplex stainless steel family.

The advantage of the duplex structure is that it combines the stress corrosion cracking resistance and high strength of ferritic alloys with the ease of fabrication and excellent corrosion resistance of austenitic alloys.

The service temperature of 2205 duplex stainless steel should be limited to below 600° F. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures will make 2205 stainless steel brittle.

What is the difference between duplex 2205 stainless steel plate and austenitic 304 stainless steel plate?

1) The yield strength is more than double that of ordinary austenitic stainless steel, and it has sufficient plasticity required for forming. The wall thickness of storage tanks or pressure vessels made of duplex stainless steel is 30-50% less than that of commonly used austenitic, which is conducive to reducing costs.

2) It has excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Even the duplex stainless steel with the lowest alloy content has higher resistance to stress corrosion cracking than austenitic stainless steel, especially in an environment containing chloride ions. Stress corrosion is a prominent problem that ordinary austenitic stainless steel is difficult to solve.

3) The corrosion resistance of 2205 duplex stainless steel, which is the most commonly used in many media, is better than that of ordinary 316L austenitic stainless steel, and super duplex stainless steel has extremely high corrosion resistance. In some media, such as acetic acid and formic acid, it can even replace high-alloy austenitic stainless steel and even corrosion-resistant alloys.

4) It has good local corrosion resistance. Compared with austenitic stainless steel with equivalent alloy content, its wear corrosion resistance and fatigue corrosion resistance are better than austenitic stainless steel.

5) It has a lower linear expansion coefficient than austenitic stainless steel and is close to that of carbon steel. It is suitable for connection with carbon steel and has important engineering significance, such as the production of composite plates or linings.

6) Regardless of dynamic or static load conditions, it has a higher energy absorption capacity than austenitic stainless steel. This has obvious advantages for structural parts to cope with sudden accidents such as collisions and explosions, and has practical application value.
