309 stainless steel is a chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel grade that is often used in high temperature environments. Due to the high chromium and nickel content, 309 stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion and has excellent resistance to oxidation and heat.
This type of stainless steel also has excellent strength at room and elevated temperatures. The main difference between 309 and 309S stainless steel is the carbon content. 309S contains much less carbon to minimize carbide precipitation and improve weldability.
